What is cybersecurity and why is it so important?
Due to growing digitalisation, Flemish enterprises are more than ever at risk of falling victim to cybercriminals. It can happen to any business, both small SMEs and large multinationals, in any industry. Therefore, it is important for companies to be adequately prepared for a cyber incident. A good cybersecurity policy addresses both technology, management procedures and employee training and awareness. Cybersecurity is becoming increasingly important for the development and implementation of new products and services. Consequently, investments in cybersecurity are a must if we are to establish a resilient digital economy in Flanders.
What does Flanders do?
With the Flanders Policy Plan Cybersecurity, the first cycle of which was approved on 22 March 2019, and the second cycle on 22 March 2024, Flanders aims to arm itself against the many challenges in the area of cybersecurity. Under the moniker Cybersecurity Flanders, the Flemish Government invests €15 million per year. The plan consists of three components that complement and reinforce each other.

The policy plan invests in the strategic basic research conducted by Flemish strategic research centres and universities.
Boosting the cybersecurity maturity of Flemish enterprises with a focus on using innovative cybersecurity solutions
VLAIO helps Flemish companies boost their cybersecurity maturity by supporting the use of innovative cybersecurity technologies.
Raising awareness and training
The Department of Economy, Science and Innovation and VLAIO, together with knowledge institutions and the VLAIO network, are working on broad awareness and training on the subject of cybersecurity.
Cybersecurity barometer
The cybersecurity barometer is a study commissioned annually by the Flemish Government to map cybersecurity maturity among Flemish companies.
